This page explains what personal information this website collects, why, and what you can do about it. I have kept it short and plain on purpose.
Who is responsible
The British Car Scene is run by Mark Thompson and operated by Super Simple Training Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 09988577). Its registered office is 18 Micklehill Drive, Shirley, Solihull, West Midlands, B90 2PU. Super Simple Training Ltd is the data controller for this website.
The easiest way to get in touch about anything on this page is the Contact page.
What I collect and why
If you buy something from the shop. I collect your name, email address, delivery and billing address, phone number if you give it, and what you ordered. I use this to take payment, make and deliver your order, and deal with any questions or returns. I do not see or store your card details. Payment is handled by Stripe or PayPal.
If you use the “Tell me something” form. I collect whatever you write. Your name and contact details are optional, and I only use them to reply to you. The form is provided by Microsoft Forms.
If you vote in a poll. The site records your vote and your IP address, and places a cookie in your browser, so that the same person cannot vote twice in the same poll.
If you sign up for the newsletter. I collect your first name and email address, and Mailchimp records when you signed up and confirmed. I use them only to email you when a new story goes live. Mailchimp also tells me whether an email was opened and which links were clicked, so I can see which stories people are interested in. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
When you visit any page. The site counts visits and page views so I can see which stories people read and improve the site. This is described under “Cookies” below.
There are no comments, no user accounts and no advertising trackers on this site. I do not sell your information to anyone.
Cookies
This site uses only a small number of cookies. None of them are used for advertising or marketing.
- Basket cookies. These remember what is in your shopping basket. The shop cannot work without them.
- Poll cookie. Set only if you vote in a poll, to stop repeat votes.
- Visitor statistics cookies. Set by Jetpack Stats, a service from Automattic. They are used only to count visits and page views so I can improve the site. They are not used for advertising.
How to opt out of visitor statistics. Turn on the “Do Not Track” setting in your browser and this site will not count your visits. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. The site will still work, although the shopping basket needs its cookies.
Who I share information with
I only share what each company needs to do its job:
- Printful prints, packs and posts shop orders on my behalf, so it receives your name, delivery address and order.
- Stripe and PayPal take payments.
- Bluehost hosts the website.
- Automattic provides Jetpack, which counts visits and delivers some of the images on the site.
- Microsoft provides the feedback form.
- Mailchimp, a service from Intuit, sends the newsletter, so it holds your first name and email address.
- Google supplies the fonts the site uses, so your browser connects to Google to load them.
Some of these companies are based outside the UK, including in the United States, so your information may be processed there.
The legal reasons I rely on
- Contract: to fulfil and support an order you have placed, including delivery, returns and customer service.
- Legal obligation: to keep the business and tax records the law requires.
- Legitimate interests: to read and reply to feedback, to run fair polls, and to understand how the site is used so I can improve it.
- Consent: to send you the newsletter. You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing.
How long I keep it
- Order records: six years after the end of the financial year of the order, because UK company and tax rules require it.
- Feedback form responses: up to 12 months after you send them, then deleted, unless I need longer to finish dealing with your enquiry.
- Poll votes, and the IP address recorded with each one: for as long as the poll results are shown on the site.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. Mailchimp then keeps a record that you unsubscribed, so you are not emailed again.
Keeping information secure
This site uses a secure HTTPS connection. Card payments are handled by Stripe and PayPal, so your card details never reach this website.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask me to:
- give you a copy of the information I hold about you
- correct anything that is wrong
- delete your information, where I am not required by law to keep it
- object to how I use it, or ask me to limit it
- send your information to you or to another organisation in a usable format
To do any of these, use the Contact page. There is no charge.
If you are unhappy with how I have handled your information, please tell me first so I can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
Links to other websites
This site links to other websites, including social media. They have their own privacy policies, and I am not responsible for them.
